Cleaning Your Devices
Do you wash your hands every time you touch your face, or rub your eyes? Is that a no? Don’t worry, because we’re all guilty. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, Covid-19 we’ve all been making significant changes to our lifestyle and cleanliness to prevent the virus from spreading. Now we’re all obsessing over hand washing, buying excessive amounts of hand sanitiser and Wearing masks everywhere we go.
But are we forgetting anything? The technology we couldn’t imagine living without. Our smartphones, tablets, and whatever else. We carry these devices with us, pretty much everywhere we go. If you were leaving your house, you wouldn’t go without it, the same as your purse or keys. In fact it may surprise many to know but the average tablet/ smartphone carries more bacteria and germs than a toilet seat. ‘Which?’ conducted an experiment in an office, showing an example of this. People will put their phone down, to wash their hands and then pick it back up. This defeats the entire object of washing your hands.
Cleaning Your Device- The Solution
- Health experts suggested you should clean your phone as many times as you wash your hands. Which as we already know is quite frequent. But the more often you use your device, means regular cleaning. Overall this is for ‘you’ as the individual to access.
- Unplug any cables before you start cleaning. Make sure the device is turned off. And take off all cases and accessories, depending on how thorough you want to be.
- Use a damp, soft, lint-free cloth to wipe clean. Use a dry lint-free cloth to remove streaks and dry your phone. Avoid getting moisture in any openings or ports, as this could cause substantial damage. Disinfect using specially-designed screen wipes. Apple advises against using alcohol-based cleaners on iPads or iPhones as these can damage the screen. Be very careful not to use harsh chemicals or soaking wet cloths as the damage could be detrimental. Leading to damaging the protective coat on your phone’s screen, which could make it easier for germs to stick to the surface. If you’re really unsure what to use check with the producer of your device, because they should know specifically.
Clean Devices Shared At Work
In some situations you may find yourself sharing devices with your colleagues or in offices, maybe computers? Unfortunately not all employers are able to provide each individual employee with their own. Although this is not ideal alongside having to social distance, you can still protect yourself.
- Firstly when you know you will be coming into contact with a unit your colleagues have been touching, you must take extra care. Use gloves if you are being handed the unit.
- Hopefully your employer would have provided personal protective equipment (PPE) as well as something to clean the devices you’ll be sharing. Ideally using specifically-designed screen wipes.
