Surface Pro 7 vs Surface Pro X

You want a Tablet Computer running Windows and you know that the Surface Go 2 is too small & under powered, what do you pick? Microsoft has two options available which could fit the bill, the Surface Pro 7 & Surface Pro X, but what’s the difference and which one is right for me?

Leaving aside the CPU, RAM & Storage Options; which are very much a personal preference based on how you use your device, feel free to give us a call if you have any concerns about picking the right option. Below you will find the typical Tech Spec Comparison sheet.

So they look very similar; why not go for the Surface Pro X? it is smaller, lighter, has a bigger screen & better battery life. Unfortunately, it is not as simple as that.

First, it is best to understand what the Surface Pro 7 is. It is a Windows 10 PC. If you use a piece of software where the technical specs (CPU, RAM Storage etc.) are suitable for your chosen Surface Pro 7 then it will work.

The Surface Pro X has a CPU which works differently to that in the Surface Pro 7. It needs programs specifically designed to run it. If you typically use applications which run in your web browser (e.g Google Docs) this isn’t a concern. Nor is it a concern if you exclusively use programmes from the Windows Store (Word, Excel etc.).

If you want to use a different application you could face a myriad of issues ranging from slow performance to not even being able to install the application.

So if you just use your Surface for emails, word processing and the occasional web browser game the Surface Pro X would be a great solution. If you have other requirements it is best to opt for the Surface Pro 7. The Surface Pro 7 is more alike to a PC thanks to its capabilities, whereas the Surface Pro X has increased resemblance to a tablet, internally and externally. Physically it’s the easiest tablet to carry around, therefore suitable for people always on the go.

Should you want a Surface Pro X but have any concerns about using it for your workflow get in touch and one of our team will be happy to help you find out if the Surface Pro X is right for you.
